Legionella Pneumophila bacteria measure 0,5 – 0,7 µm and can frequently be found in plumbing of large buildings, such as hospitals, nursing homes, apartment buildings, hotels, sports centres, swimming pools and camp grounds. Especially in water with temperatures between 25 à 50 °C growth of these bacteria can be explosive.
Safe drinking water is of vital importance. Especially in public buildings, in the interest of residents, guests and patients. A Legionella infection via inhaled water vapour can lead to a life threatening pneumonia. Shown is a mortality of 15% in the elderly and people with immune deficiency.
Besides it is a matter of great concern for the buildings administrator, because the damage can be considerable. If a collective drinking water supply does not satisfy the regulations with respect to bacterial safety, the owner/administrator can be held liable.
The disinfection methods in use so far have proved not to be adequate. More than 10 years of experience with thermal or chemical disinfection has learned that none of these means are enough to stop Legionella growth in the water works. On the other hand there are harmful side effects, such as high costs, damage to the service pipes and the addition of chemicals and heavy metals to the water in the case of copper/silver ionisation.
Filtration at the point of use is therefore an obvious solution to prevent infection.
